Tibet: The Roof of the World

Twenty percent of China's people live in southwest China, an area that covers 26 percent of the country's total landmass. The land is huge, varied, and full of dramatic contrasts. Except for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, much of the area is sub-tropical. But here you can also find high mountains and deep valleys, glaciers and snow-covered peaks, mountain basins and volcanoes, hot springs and plateau-lakes, swamps and prairies. At an elevation of 8,848 metres, Mt. Qomolangma (Mt. Everest), is considered the "Roof of the World", soaring over the border of China and Nepal.

Attractions In Tibet

Lhasa: is perched on a plateau with a majestic palace. Meaning "Holy Land" in Tibetan language, Lhasa, Tibet's exotic capital city, rises majestically against the sky on a plateau that is more than 3,600 metres above sea level. The city attracts an increasing number of tourists each year.

Potala Palace

Potala Palace is Lhasa's architectural, historical, and cultural jewel. Situated on Hongshan Mountain, the Potala stands at an altitude that is roughly equivalent to that of Mt. Fujiyama or Mt. Hood. The Potala building dates from the 17th century, and is located on the site of a former structure built in the 7th century by King Songtsan Gambo of the Tubo Dynasty. The majestic palace encompasses over the 102 acres. The main building stands 13 storeys high.

Jokhang Monastery

Located in the old district of Lhasa, the monastery is a building complex built in the mid-7th century. Incorporating  the features of Nepalese and Indian architecture, its golden canopy glows under the sun. It enshrines the statue of Sakyamuni, which was brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng.

Sera Monastery

The Monastery lies at the foot of a mountain on the northern outskirts of Lhasa. It is typical of Tibetan architecture.

Yalong River National Scenic Spot

It is the cradle of Tibetan civilization and the birthplace of the Tibet people, the only state-level scenic spot in Tibet.

Ruins of Guge Kindom

The ruin of the Gege Kingdom is a 300-metre hill on the southern bank of the Xiangquan River in Zanda County.

Lake Namco

Held sacred by the Tibetan people, the lake is 4,718 metres above sea level. The beautiful scenery and mysterious tales of the area draw countless visitors and pilgrimages.

Nyingchi

Located on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, Nyingchi is 3,000 metres above sea level. The inhabitants here are mainly the Moinbas and the Lhobas.

Mount Qomolangma

Towering 8,848 metres in the middle section of the Himalayas, Mt. Qomolangma teems with snow-capped peaks and glaciers. It boasts four peaks above 8,000 metres high, and 38 peaks above 7,000 metres high, thus reputed as the First Pole on the earth.
